Karnataka NGO Provides Mid Day Meals For School Children

The Akshaya Patra Foundation was started in June 2000 in Bangalore. This Foundation implements the mid day meal programme with the mission of feeding 5 million children by 2020. It drives all its work towards its vision of -No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger-. Though it’s primary cause is to provide mid day meal to Government schools, it emphasises equally on education of the children also. The reason being this it is looking forward to expand its reach to more and more parts of the country.

Currently, Akshaya Patra is feeding children in 19 locations of 9 States of India. Every day it feeds 1.3 million children in more than 9000 Government schools. This feeding programme has had many positive impacts like increase in school enrolment, improved attendance, improved concentration and performance of children, and decreased school drop-out rate. The mid day meal programme also acts as an incentive for the parents to send their children to school thereby the children of the needy section of the society get an opportunity to get education instead of earning for a square meal. Karnataka NGO works at the grass root level to maximise its reach. It believes in providing -unlimited food for education-.

The below story is an evidence of the same. The recent Public Examination results explained how food is a vital part of education. With an aim to pursue her career as a doctor, Smruthi D, a student of Anandashrama High School Kotekar, Mangalore took the first step towards her dream by scoring a brilliant 92%. Smruthi’s sincerity towards her dream is evident when she says, -My neighbour is pursuing medicine, I will take guidance from her and work hard to reach my goal.- Smruthi’s mother is elated with her daughter’s scorecard and says, -Smruthi will make my dreams come true even though I could not continue my education as I got married at an early age.- Apart from academics, Smruthi is also a sports enthusiast and loves to play kho-kho and throw ball. Her interest also lies in dancing and even though she has not received any formal training she has participated in many dance programmes.

An Akshaya Patra beneficiary, Smruthi loves the mid day meal served at her school and says, -I eagerly wait for the lunch time. I like the curd-based menu the best.- She comes from a humble family with her father who works as a driver and mother rolls beedi to supplement the family income. With a smile her mother says, -Just like how my earnings help my family, the mid day meal provided by Akshaya Patra helps our children.- Support many such children. They have the urge to learn and achieve, they just a little support from you.

Comparing The Best Child Trust Fund (CTF)

The Government announced earlier this month that the number of children with a Child Trust Fund has reached over 3 million. However, The Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Kitty Ussher, also highlighted that only three-quarters of parents have actively opened their Child Trust Fund accounts.

This means that for the seven-hundred and fifty-thousand children whose parents did not open the Child Trust Fund themselves, the opportunity to gain one year’s worth of interest is lost. In fact, the accumulated loss of interest for all those Funds that have not been opened amounts to an estimated 15 million!

The Child Trust Fund is a long-term savings and investment plan set up by the Government to encourage parents to save for their children’s future. The Child Trust Fund is available to all children born on or after 1 September 2002 . Children will receive an initial 250 in vouchers to open their Child Trust Fund accounts, with a further 250 when they reach seven years of age. In addition to this money, parents, family and friends can contribute up to 1,200 each year into the Fund.

Although opening a Child Trust Fund is relatively straightforward, choosing one can be more difficult. With three types of accounts (cash, stakeholder or shares) available from numerous banks and building societies each with their own offers, terms and conditions and rates, finding the right Child Trust Fund for their children leaves many parents confused. Recent research from The Actuarial Profession has shown that most parents are simply overwhelmed by the huge amount of information they receive. Often, the just need concise information which simplifies and compares the various accounts available.

Currently, there are several websites that compare only Cash Child Trust Funds, but only MyEggNest.com leads the way by providing a comparison table of all three types of Child Trust Funds: Cash, Stakeholders and Equity (or Shares) Child Trust Funds.

Having Trouble Potty Training Your Child

Difficulties in potty training a child can be managed with information and patience. Discover how to successfully tackle troubles when potty training your kid. One of the reasons why parents shy away from taking the potty training challenge head-on is because they imagine more troubles in the process than they will ever face. I mean, this is something unavoidable and has to be done so why not do it in an informed and cheerful way. And this bears repetition so I’ll say it again; toilet training is not meant to be an avoidable chore even when a child is faced with problems.

Look up online resources that carry information on specifics of how to deal with trouble scenarios when potty training your child. Be prepared, so that you don’t feel helpless if a situation does arise.

Here are some scenarios that can potentially lead to trouble when toilet training your child.

A common situation is one in which the child takes quite readily to learning potty use for bowel cleaning but does nothing to convey a need to use the toilet for urinating.

Don’t let this be a dead end for you; consider the reason. Most probably the child is comfortable wetting his diaper or knickers and having them changed instead of taking the trouble to be escorted to the toilet. It is a matter of time before he learns that is better to pee in the toilet and stay dry rather than endure uncomfortable wetness.

Begin training at an appropriate age and not earlier. An unsavory incident or any harshness from you will send the child into a shell; you don’t want that to happen. Quite often, what is construed as trouble in potty training is simply a lack of enthusiasm on the child’s part. Give him a positive surrounding and a positive feedback; he’ll do well.

A child with poor bowel movement routine, for example someone that does not experience motions daily, will experience constipation. Straining to pass stool can be painful and children will associate potty use with that unpleasantness. You can make it easy for them by feeding them fiber-rich food and keeping them hydrated.

There is no potty training issue that is insurmountable. The troubles that you may face can easily be tackled by you. You can always take help from a pediatrician or from parents that have successfully tackled troubles in toilet training their child.
